The project began in 2005 with a group of young people from the community of Isla Arena, Campeche, interested in environmental conservation, who saw in ecotourism an alternative for the valorization and protection of natural resources, offering boat and canoe tours in mangroves within the Petenes Biosphere Reserve and the Celestún Estuary.

Thanks to its privileged location in the reserve, it is possible to identify a wide variety of migratory birds that find the island the ideal place to rest and feed, especially the pink flamingo.

The initiative is constituted as a cooperative society and currently has beachfront cabins, a restaurant, boat and canoes to offer lodging services, local seafood-based food, fishing and bird-watching tours. During the development of the project, cleaning campaigns have been implemented, canals have been dredged, and mangroves have been reforested; a group of children from the community have also been trained to conserve and identify birds.
