GUARDIANES DE LOS MANGLARES DE DZININTUN

The initiative began in 1994 with a group of inhabitants of the communities surrounding the Calakmul reserve, who took advantage of the tourist flow in the archaeological zone to offer guided tours as an alternative for local development. After two years of work, they became a civil society; however, due to the incipient tourist demand, some members gradually abandoned the initiative until it became a family project.

After several years of offering guided tours and camping in any part of the reserve, they realized that the basic temporary infrastructure for food and sanitary services was expensive, complicated and was causing negative impacts to the reserve, which went against their philosophy. In 2003, they established a camp with low environmental impact infrastructure on the plot of land owned by a Conhuas ejidataria and member of the organization.

Currently, the organization is made up of three men and two women who, with more than 20 years of experience, offer lodging services in tented houses, food, and jungle tours with specialized guides; through ecotourism, they have contributed to the conservation of the reserve's environment while maintaining a dignified quality of life.
